Suppose the Fourth Crusade does not result in the sack of Constantinople, and the Byzantine Empire, the “Second Rome,” is able to contain the sudden rise of the Ottoman Turks. It may find support in the Russian principalities that share its Orthodox faith, and even, after the Catholic-Protestant split, among the Austrians and the French. After all, it has already survived the fall of Rome, the Persians, the Arabs, the Bulgarians, the Seljuk Turks, the Rus, the Vikings, and the Crusades. It may even survive into the modern era, as a Greek state, but with traces of its Roman heritage.
All cards in this pack are designed to be used with the 1550 map variant (see C1c). The starting English and Holy Roman Empire states use the Reformed Theocracies rule, while the two new map cards replace the starting Hungarian and Ottoman medieval states. Trebizond starts the game on the Red Sea location.
The original empire cards for the Ottoman Empire and Hungary must be replaced with the new promotional empire cards. The new empire card for the Papal States is only brought into play if the Papal States becomes a Reformation or Muslim theocracy.
The new Victory Square tile must be used in addition to the original ones, making a total of five Victory Squares in play. The new banker cover cards must be placed on an existing banker board (any banker can be replaced). The new market cards must be shuffled into their appropriate decks.
